GUINEA PIGS

WE TAKE UNWANTED GUINEA PIGS AS WELL

My name is Sam and I am one of the Directors of the Whitley Rabbit Rescue.  There are many unwanted Guinea pigs as well as rabbits or though Guinea pig rescues are not often heard of.

I myself love Guinea pigs, I think they are sweet and funny I love the way they run about and the way they chatter to each other.

I have Guinea pigs as well as rabbits.  Thier names are pickle and he is 5 years old, Alfie who is grey and gorgeous, and fluffy who is a lovely little 8 week old baby. . they are all rescued and now live with me and my family along with 14  rabbits. (all our rabbits waiting for adoption)  They live in their own wooden play house because rabbits and Guinea pigs should not live together.

if you have a unwanted Guinea pig or know of a Guinea pig in trouble contact us NOW

Guinea pigs are loving and  they love companionship and being able to run around freely and enjoy  playing and hiding.

They are very fast moving animals.  Guinea pigs are much easier to look after than rabbits and do very well in pairs or in a large group of the same sex.

NEVER KEEP A GUINEA PIG WITH A RABBIT

This is not fair on the rabbit or the Guinea pig.  There are many reasons for this, here are just a few;

1) They don't eat the same food

2) They don't speak the same langauge

3) Guniea pigs tend to bite rabbits legs and ears and could really harm your bunny, also a rabbit will try to mate with the Guinea pig which could make your Guinea pig very poorly and need vet treatment or even cause your Guniea pig to die through shock and trauma to her insides.

HANDLING

SNOWY AND PATCHES - TWO GUINEAS LOOKING FOR A NEW HOME TOGETHER NOW!

->

Guinea pigs are by far the easiest of pet rodents to handle. They  are generally docile and are unlikely to struggle and bite when picked up which makes them more of  a childs pet then a rabbit.

Guinea pigs are easily frightened so you must be carefull when going to the hutcth, move slowly and quietly and always approach the Guinea pig from the front at hutch level..

Your Guinea pig could be around for a long time so you must be sure you know how to look after him right.  Guinea pigs can live up to the age of 7 years and we have seen some older then that!

FEEDING

Guinea pigs by nature are grazing animals in the wild.  They eat leaves, stems and seeds of grasses but in captivity they eat grass, hay and fresh vegetable matter.  They also need a good grain mix, Guinea pigs love fruit such as apples and  bananas etc.

A nice treat is corn on the cob.  Guinea pigs enjoy this and it is also good for their teeth as well as being highly nutritious.

Grass and hay are the single most important items in a Guinea pigs diet. Good quality meadow hay is mainly green in colour and is sweet smelling without any hint of mustiness, and it is also free from harsh weeds such as thistle and dock.

As well as rehoming unwanted Guinea pigs, we also offer boarding for animals when their owners are away on hoilday or are to sick to look after them
